Introducing AltTab Pro
AltTab is introducing a Pro version — and staying open source
After more than 8 years of development, AltTab now has a Pro tier to support the project’s future, following the path of Rectangle Pro, Alfred Powerpack, and BetterTouchTool, apps that kept their core free while building toward long-term sustainability.
AltTab has grown from a small utility to something hundreds of thousands of people use every day. The Pro tier aims to fund the ongoing work needed to keep it reliable, current, and improving.
What stays free
Everything that makes the core experience:
- Reliable, fast window switching with high-quality thumbnails
- All customization options and settings
- Dark Mode, live preview, window controls, trackpad gestures, and more. See all features
- Open source under GPL-3.0
The free version is not a limited trial. It is the premium window-switching experience AltTab is known for.
What Pro adds
Pro is for power users who want more from their workflow:
- App Icons and Window Titles appearance styles
- Search — find windows by typing
- Auto Size — the switcher adapts to your content
- Extra keyboard shortcuts — with per-shortcut appearance
- New advanced features — long-standing power-user requests that have been on the roadmap for years
Every new user gets a 14-day free trial of all Pro features.
For everyone who helped build AltTab
If you contributed to the project, you should have received a free Pro Lifetime license by email. If yours hasn’t arrived, email [email protected] to have one re-sent.
Nothing disappears
- The source code is developed entirely in the open under GPL-3.0
- You can always build from source
- The free version keeps getting all updates, including macOS compatibility, performance, bug fixes, etc
Why this, and why now
Volunteer evenings and weekends are not enough for the kind of work AltTab needs: faster macOS compatibility updates, more thorough testing, and the polish that a tool used hundreds of times a day deserves. The Pro tier aims to make that possible.
This model has worked well for other apps in this space. Rectangle kept its free version excellent and launched Rectangle Pro alongside it. Alfred has sustained a small team for over fifteen years with its Powerpack. BetterTouchTool transitioned from donations to paid and came out stronger. AltTab follows in their footsteps.
